Class 714 are steeple-cab Bo-Bo diesel-electrics, built 1992-97, combining the frames and running gear of redundant single-engined Class 735s with two new 400hp engines and auxiliaries housed in a modular superstructure. The 714s were mainly used on local passenger services in the early 2000s.
The two prototypes had 335hp engines and retained the original superstructure but the 58 production locos were given a completely new modular superstructure and cab and more powerful 400hp engines. The class has largely been displaced from their passenger duties by new DMUs or rebuilt railbuses.
