The Long Haul
Long trains of empties were collected from the CNR interchange at Liushuquan, some 15 km from the mine, and worked to Nanzhan yard, a short distance from the washery. At Nanzhan they were broken up and tripped to the mines or the washery. The line from Liushuquan is uphill almost all the way and trains of 50 or 60 wagons required a loco at end to provide enough power. A small pool of dedicated engines normally handled this traffic but on 12 November 2005 the lead loco on the afternoon working was JS 8366, on loan from the opencast fleet. The train is seen here shortly after leaving Liushuquan. The banker was still out of sight behind the train.
